For a while now, I have wanted to share with all the Wonderlings (what I have finally decided to call my readers) a collection of recommendations if you will. Inspired by many blogs out there, behold the Wonderland Registry!
The Wonderland Registry will contain many of my favorite things—raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens—and a few new obsessions that I simply can’t get enough of. I hope to turn this into a recurring post and welcome any and all recommendations.
Let’s get the ball rolling, shall we?
For the Mind:
I love to read and I cannot begin this first Registry without some kind of book to share. After months of scrutinizing and some very enthusiastic recommendations, I have finally succumbed to the “mommy porn” as Rose calls it.
That’s right, the Fifty Shades trilogy.
I know what you might be thinking—erotic novel, horny housewife, S&M—because I thought all of that too. I read the synopsis and thought it was a cheap rip-off of one of my favorite movies, Secretary and I wasn’t about to go near it. And then my mother, who rarely completes a book, was begging me to read it. She said I would love it and it wasn’t what I thought. She was right.
The writing is not the best and can be very repetitive, but the story draws you in. You want to know if these characters will ever sort their issues out and just make it work as they so clearly want. I think every straight woman out there has lusted after an emotionally unavailable man and came back to him time and time again in an attempt to figure him out. I devoured the first book yesterday and am well into the second tonight. Forget what you think you know about these books and read a few pages before you decide (eReaders make this pretty easy to do nowadays with book samples). I’m hooked and it seems so are millions of others out there.
For the Ears:
Ever since I saw Dark Shadows, I have not been able to stop humming the soundtrack. One song in particular.
On top of all of the other great hits from the 70’s, The Moody Blues’ “Nights in White Satin” has stayed with me since I sat in that crowded movie theater and really listened to it for the first time. What can I possibly say about this song? It makes you sway back and forth. It’s relatively simplistic in its melody. It’s haunting. I can’t get enough!
For the Body:
I love the beauty brand philosophy. They have great skin care products, light-yet-amazingly scented fragrances, and the yummiest smelling body wash and lotions I have ever come across. They release limited edition scents throughout the year and heading into summer, they have unveiled Cabana Girl.
This guava coconut body wash manages to encompass all the smells of summer. You can just picture yourself on a lounge chair with a frothy drink adorned with a miniature umbrella when you use it. It’s fruity and beachy, but lightly-scented so you don’t smell like a cocktail all day. There was another scent a few years back (I think it was called Surfer Girl) that was pretty good, but Cabana Girl is ten times better. I may have to buy a few more bottles to last me the rest of the year.
For the Stomach:
A few days ago I was introduced to gourmet cupcakes. Crumbs Bake Shop to be exact. Yes, I know, I’m years behind everyone else and their line-out-the-door madness for Sprinkles, but better late than never. Clearly, I had no idea what I was missing.
Over a few days, I managed to eat the cookie dough, cotton candy, AND key lime cupcakes. My tongue did oral gymnastics at the thought of another taste.* The cakes were moist and the frosting was liberally layered on top of these muffin-sized treats. But the absolute best part was the hidden surprise in the middle of some. The cookie dough cupcake had a chocolate fudge core! Please excuse me as I dry my watering mouth.
Luckily, the bakery is not an easy distance to me so I won’t be tempted to stop in ever week to sample another of the delicious flavors. But they do deliver.
So there you have it, the first Wonderland Registry. I can’t wait to start collecting ideas for the next one.
But for now, it’s back to my book.
*Fun Fact: I had to pause momentarily as my building began to shake. An earthquake of 4.0 magnitude hit just off the coast. After experiencing so many tremors, I sometimes miss them. Oh, the perils of living in Southern California.
