The Increasing Appeal Of Domesticity

The Ultimate Career

In college, I once took a class all about the 1950’s.  It was a fascinating time in America.  Communism was the “C” word and we faced increasing tensions with Russia and Korea.  Many people associate this decade with such things as the birth of rock and roll and the Golden Age of television.  Others with a sexualization we were just beginning to uncover with the advent of Playboy Magazine and the most famous blonde to ever grace the Silver Screen: Marilyn Monroe.

For me, I associate this time with a different type of woman: the homemaker.

When In Doubt, Add More Bacon

Remember last year when I proved to you all that I am a silent auction queen?  Of course you don’t and I wouldn’t expect you to.  It was a long time ago and so much has happened since then.  A quick recap: I won a silent auction at a 5K I ran.  The culinary themed gift basket was full of cooking utensils, fancy salt and pepper shakers, kitchen towels, and a gift certificate for a Let’s Get Cookin’ class at the Westlake Culinary Institute.

There’ll Be Parties For Hosting

One of the selling points when I bought my condo was the large kitchen with ample countertop space.  I pictured myself playing hostess to friends for dinner parties, festive get-togethers, and celebrations of all seasons.  I imagined yummy foods and delicious drinks atop every available surface.  Happy faces would be everywhere and laughter would be the soundtrack of the evening.

I just knew I had to have a party before the year was up.

A Black Treat For Halloween

It’s Halloween! Whether you are dressed to the nines as a sexy [insert any profession] or are home in sweats passing out the unwanted chocolates to trick-or-treaters while hoarding the favorites (I’m looking at you, Milky Way Midnight), the night is full of fun movies, delicious morsels, and just a hint of the spooks that make our hearts race and our palms sweat. There are tricks and there are treats. Just don’t let a black cat cross your path.

Or in my case, try to trip you.

I’m almost to the halfway point and there are still quite a few items left to complete on my list.  Luckily, 2014 has really been my year and accomplishing goals has never bene easier.  Ok, so they’re not all exactly easy, but they have been coming together better than I could have ever imagined.  There’s a lot I’ve already written about, but some things didn’t seem big enough to warrant their own post.

To celebrate the return of sweaters and getting to wear boots for a week straight, I present to you the other items I was able to check off this summer.

A Living Legend

This world is filled with a variety of talented people.  Some are starving artists waiting to get an interested buyer while others happen upon an idea that changes the world (I’m looking at you, Mark Zuckerberg!).  Many of us will never have the chance to meet these revolutionaries, but when the opportunity comes up to share the same air, we must seize it for they come along with the same frequency as a winning lottery ticket.  That would be a very slim chance.

About a month before our trip to Costa Rica, Karen asked me a question:

Do you like the Beatles?

A Crime Most Hilarious

As I’ve written about before, my dad and I like to go out and do things together.  Over the years, we’ve chuckled at plays, giddy-upped on horseback, and felt the wind on our faces while exiting a plane at 13,ooo feet.  We always have a good time, just the two of us.  So, when Father’s Day rolled around, I knew exactly what I wanted to get him: an evening of murder and mystery.  The fact that I checked off #11 on my 30-Before-30 list was just an added bonus.

Home Sweet Home

That’s right, Wonderlings. I have finally checked off #1 on my 30-Before-30 list and I am the proud owner of a ginormous townhouse. As you may remember, the road to real estate bliss was paved with multiple disappointments.  I walked away from a home, I lost out on a home, and I moved in with my mother while I waited for the The One.  Despite the emotional roller coaster that real estate can become, I never lost hope that I would eventually have a place to call my own.

And boy do I!

Adios, Costa Rica!

climb-that-moutain

Despite being woken up throughout the night requiring several trips to the bathroom, the morning from our balcony was absolutely gorgeous and no amount of stomach-ache could make me ignore it.  I couldn’t help but capture the glorious morning before the monkeys started howling and the mosquitoes started biting.
